Family lawyers are trained to advise, negotiate and advocate. But a surprising share of the week goes to tasks that either can't be billed or get written down the moment a client questions the invoice. The work still has to be done. The problem is that it gets done by hand, more than once.
Here are eight tasks that quietly drain a family law practice.
1. Chasing missing statements
Emails, reminders and follow-up calls asking for the same three statements. Each one takes only a few minutes, but they add up across every open matter, and disclosure stalls while you wait.
2. Re-keying statements into spreadsheets
Typing balances, account numbers and dates from PDFs into a spreadsheet is slow and prone to errors. Clients rarely want to pay attorney rates for it.
3. Reconciling versions of the balance sheet
Your version, opposing counsel's version, the financial neutral's version. Before anyone can negotiate, someone has to work out why the totals don't match.
4. Re-running support after every change
A new pay stub, a revised parenting schedule, a different tax assumption. Every change means rerunning the worksheet and checking what else it affects.
5. Answering "Where are we?"
Clients want status updates, and they deserve them. But piecing together what's been received, what's missing and what's next from email threads takes longer than it should.
6. Conforming the agreement to the final numbers
When the numbers move late in negotiation, every clause, exhibit and schedule that mentions them has to be found and updated by hand.
7. Filling out court forms
Financial declarations and court forms ask for figures that already exist somewhere else in the file. Copying them over is one more chance to introduce a mismatch.
8. Fixing errors found late
The most expensive non-billable time: a missed account found when the retirement order is drafted, or a mismatch a clerk catches. These fixes often become write-offs.
Bill for judgment, not data entry
None of these tasks needs a law degree. All of them become faster when disclosure arrives in one place and every schedule, worksheet and form comes from the same set of facts. VennBoard is built so lawyers spend their hours on the work clients value most.
