Grants and Assistance for Single Fathers

Nearly every programme in this library is open to single fathers on exactly the same terms as single mothers. Here is what applies, the two things that genuinely do not, and the part that is harder in practice.

Almost all of it applies to you

The guides below are written with single mothers as the reader, which is how this kind of content is usually titled. That phrasing describes the audience, not the eligibility rules. The programmes behind it are means-tested household benefits, and they ask about your income, your household size and whether a child lives with you. None of them asks whether you are the mother or the father.

That covers essentially everything these guides describe:

The two that are genuinely different

WIC is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children. The maternal part of it is for pregnant and postpartum women, so that part is not open to you. The infant and child part is, and a single father applies for it as his child’s caregiver in the ordinary way.

Private awards aimed at women — the Soroptimist Live Your Dream Awards are the one that comes up most in these guides — are exactly what they say. There are far fewer private awards aimed specifically at single fathers, which is a real gap rather than something this page can talk you out of.

What is actually harder

The obstacle for single fathers is usually not the eligibility rule. It is proving the thing the rule depends on.

How to read the guides below. Where one says "single mom", read it as "the parent the child lives with" — for the government programmes it describes, that is what the rule actually turns on. The exceptions are WIC’s maternal component and any award that names women explicitly.

The state guides

One page per state below, each naming that state’s own cash assistance programme and the agency that runs it. For the same programmes covered at greater length, the single mothers guides go deeper on payment levels and time limits, and every state page below links to its own.
